This session is designed for beginning reporters and other news staffers who may not have had much formal journalism training or just need a refresher course. Topics include the importance of accuracy, clarity and integrity in every news story; news story basics; the difference between straight news and the narrative approach and when to use them; writing leads with punch; writing for the readers and not sources; feature-writing basics; covering your beat; basic interviewing techniques; going beyond the ordinary coverage of your community and how to identify and write "water cooler" stories readers will talk about.
