The Georgia Press Educational Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt foundation which was established in 1963 to provide financial assistance to students studying journalism at colleges and universities throughout the state.

Now, thanks to a Centennial Campaign in 1986, GPEF has been able to increase the sponsorship for foundation programs. Since GPEF began granting students with scholarships in 1966, the foundation has awarded in excess of $400,000. Since 1994, GPEF has provided over 150 Georgia newspapers grants to hire a paid summer intern through the Billy Watson Internship Program.

The Georgia Press Educational Foundation sponsors Newspapers in Education (NIE) by providing materials to newspapers, being a source of support to Georgia Newspapers in Education and hosting seminars and other activities to benefit NIE.

GPA wants ideas about
education fundraisers

The Georgia Press Association needs the input of its members to determine a new path for its nonprofit organization, the Georgia Press Educational Foundation Inc.

In a short survey sent this month to the publishers and leaders of its nearly 150 member newspapers, the GPA asks for guidance in developing a new fundraising event that will allow the GPEF to continue to provide money for journalism scholarships and internships.

In its 44-year existence, the GPEF has provided more than 540 students with scholarships totaling $530,000 to attend the Georgia college or university of their choice and more than 115 with internships at GPA-member newspapers.

Most of the money has been raised through the annual Cracker Crumble and Silent Auction, which itself turned 44 earlier this year. But the Cracker Crumble has become less profitable in recent years, and the GPEF board of trustees is seeking the opinions of GPA membership about how to move forward.

Options being considered include a roast of a well-known political figure, a cocktail party with a live/silent auction or entertainment, an invitational golf tournament with a reception or auction and others.

Suggestions from the GPA members also will be considered.

Surveys were sent to member newspapers in early July.
